Fujimori to evaluate military draft proposal for criminals, gang members

Presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori’s Fuerza 2011 party will evaluate a proposal to restore the military draft for criminals and gang members, daily El Comercio reported.

The proposal was made by Fujimori’s brother, Kenji, who is running for Congress on the Fuerza 2011 ticket.

“It is voluntary now, so the youths should make their own decision but due to the increase in crime in the last few years [the draft] has to be evaluated,” Keiko Fujimori said.

A recent poll by firm Datum Internacional has Fujimori tied for second place with ex-Lima mayor Luis Castañeda with 19 percent support. The candidates trail front runner Alejandro Toledo, who governed Peru from 2001-06, with 28 percent support.
