An study conducted by the United Nations Fund for Children (UNICEF), warns that poverty in Peru reaches 78% of the indigenous population of between three and 17 years, compared to 40% of those whose native tongue is Spanish.
"This difference is more accentuated among the jungle indigenous native groups, which concentrate the most of the negative indicators in terms of poverty, education, identity and health," said Paul Martin, representative of Unicef in Peru.
"It is clear that there are inequities between Spanish speaking and indigenous children, but there are also differences between the Quechua and Aymara indigenous children, compared with those from the tribes in the jungle," Martin said.
The research, which has used official figures from 2007 and 2009, indicates that indigenous population in Peru totals more than 4 million, from which more than one million are children and adolescents.
